Northeast Asia Projects

The National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP) currently has several projects on Northeast Asian security issues. They are:

  • To help break the impasse between China and Taiwan through dialogue among prominent Americans, Chinese, and Taiwanese. This project is maintained with the generous support of The Henry Luce Foundation, Ford Foundation and The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
  • To explore and build support for cooperative, multilateral means of ensuring a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, developing an appropriate verification regime, and integrating North Korea into the global community through dialogue among influential Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Russians, South Koreans, and North Koreans. This project is maintained with the generous support of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Korea Foundation.
  • To strengthen the U.S. relationship with Japan, our principal ally in the region, to strengthen the U.S.-R.O.K. relationship, and to help lay the groundwork for stability and cooperation in East Asia. This project is maintained with the generous support of the the Japan Foundation’s Center for Global Partnership and The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
  • To explore the potential for a Northeast Asian Security Forum to be composed of the United States, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, and North Korea.
  • To explore the economic dimensions of these security issues as they become increasingly intertwined.

In pursuit of these objectives, the NCAFP relies on the Track II approach. This approach brings together government officials, academics, and think tank experts to discuss current security challenges in an informal atmosphere. Free from official constraints, they can engage in frank discussions out of the glare of publicity and build trust and mutual confidence-something that is not always possible in official meetings.
